On the Pam-unky River, not far from Yorktown, therestands the White House, which is a repro-duction of the one in which Washington wasmarried in 1759, and occupies the samesite. On the ridge of Ware Creek not farfrom the White House is an old stone housewhich was mentioned in Smiths History ofVirginia, and was built by the Jamestownsettlers as a place of retreat in case of anIndian uprising. Ocean View is located on the ChesapeakeBay within range of the monster guns ofFortress Monroe and Fort Wool, popularlyknown as the Atlantic City of the South,hardly two miles from the Exposition grounds,the point at which the Federal soldierslanded during the Civil War, and one of thefinest bathing and fishing resorts at any in-terior salt water resort in the country. Ashort distance from Ocean View, on a neckof land known as Willoughby Spit, overlook-ing the Exposition grounds, is the home cfthe Hampton Roads Yacht Club, which willbe a central point of interest during theyachting races that will be held in the sum-mer of 1907. Cape Henry, where the English first disem-barked in 1607, a stone tablet now has sup-planted the old wooden cross raised by thefirst settlers to mark the spot where theadventurers landed on American soil.
