ity. The first whitemen known to have visited the City ofNorfolk were members of an expedition dis-patched to America by Sir Walter Raleigh in1585. Norfolk Towne was founded onthe 16th of August, 1682. In the earlychronicles it is related that a stockade wasbuilt to protect the town against Indian at-tacks. The Norfolk of to-day is replete withhistoric and reminiscent features. It has inthe Norfolk Academy one of the finest Doricspecimens extant. This building is one hun-dred years old. The most historic structurein the town is old St. Pauls Church, erectedin 1739, twice fired on by the British, andstill retaining imbedded in its walls a shellfired by Lord Dunmores fleet, January 1,1776. Norfolk is surrounded by interestingfortifications, ancient churches and otherbuildings. It is cosmopolitan; a good placeto live in and a good place in which to makea living. It has beautiful residences andblocks of magnificent business houses, mod-ern hotels and unequalled transportation fa-cilities.

Portsmouth. Opposite the city of Norfolk, separatedby the Elizabeth River, is the busy city ofPortsmouth, noted for its commercial andsocial activity. Beautiful homes and modernbusiness houses testify to its worth. Nearthe city is the Norfolk I^favy Yard, whichwas burned and blown up by the Federaltroops in 1862 and rebuilt by the Confeder-ates. There are immense, dry docks, ma-chinery shops of all kinds useful in shipconstruction, barrapks and parade grounds.Besides the sailors from the ships and themarines who are quartered here, 3,000 menfind steady employment in the yard, whichhas probably cost over $20,000,000. Thegreat United States Naval Hospital, whereaged and disabled Jackies of the Navy aretreated at the goverments expense, is notfar distant. Portsmouth was founded underits present name in 1753.
