s to make even athreat of a charge, when it brought them in a pretty com-pact mass, just as they were about to wheel, instead of charging, less than two hundred yards from the steadyline of pale-faces. Now, boys, save every shot. It was not a volley. The rifles cracked rapidly, one af-ter another, but all were fired in a very few seconds and theLipans recoiled in dismay, firing wildly as they went, andcarrying off their dead and wounded. Keep it up, boys. Steady. Take a pony if you canthit a redskin. The rally of the Lipans was quickly made, and theirown firing grew hotter, but it had little of the cool accuracythat Captain Skinner insisted on from his own men. All thewhile, too, he was moving steadily forward, and To-la-go-to-debegan to understand what kind of men he had to deal with. A sharp, deep-throated order to three of his braves wasrapidly obeyed, and in a few minutes more the miners heardtheir Captains voice, excitedly, Halt! Theyve brought out the boys. Theyve stoppedfiring.

The Talking Leaves. 185 It was precisely so. There were Bill and his two mates,on foot, with their arms tied behind them, and before eachstood a Lipan, with his lance levelled, ready to strike. Thats plain, boys. Theyve got their lesson. Dontwant any more. Want a talk. Theyll kill those three ifwe dont hold up. « Weve only lost two, Cap, and weve laid out moren adozen of them. Save the boys! No fault of theirn. Have a talk, Cap. Well have to give up something if we do. Theyllnever give us back the outfit. You know what we want. Were close to the bordernow. All right. Ill ride out. I reckon their chief11 cometo meet me. The meaning of the Lipans had been plain enough. Thesudden firing of the miners upon their superior force hadhad all the effect of a surprise. They were furiously angry over their losses, but theirwise leader saw that he must give them a breathing-spell.No troops in the world could stand a fire so withering asthat which came from the repeating-rifles of the despera-doe
