I knew this would be a disappointment to MissHubbard as she had cared for our boys for manyyears; but the will of the Government was strongerthan the wish of this lone woman—so the bodieswere removed. Feeling that Miss Hubbard shouldbe recognized for her sacrifice and heroic act, Iwrote to the Governor of Maine, and asked hisassistance. Governor Cobb immediately entered in-to ray plan of having the Legislature take hold of thematter. When it convened in the following January,lie brought the matter before his Council, and theytmanimously agreed to recommend an act publiclythanking Miss Hubbard for her patriotic service; thesame, after its passage, was engrossed on parchmentand sent to Anderson, with the united thanks of theLegislature.
