a widow with two grown-up daughters,and they, being proud and selfish, and CINDERELLA. jealous of their young and beautiful step-sister, because everybody loved her, madematters very unpleasant for her. They gavepoor Ella no nice clothes, nor toys, norbooks, but, as she grew older, made her dothe work of a servant for them ; and becausewhen tired out she would sit in the chimneycorner amongst the cinders these cruelsisters nick-named her Cinderella. Herfather now seemed to take little or no noticeof her, and she felt as if she had not a friendin the world. While her step-sisters wererichly dressed, and went to balls and parties,poor Cinderella was kept out of sight andordered to sweep the rooms, clean the grates,or wash the dishes, and was seldom allowedto go out to enjoy herself; Now one eveningwhen Cinderella was grown up, though stillvery young, an invitation came for a grandparty to be given in honour of the Princesbirthday ; so, of course, •irckRGii^ WX3 ell.lesL W her ?i?tex$

Justas she was thinking of her dear kind mammawho used to love her, she was surprised anda little alarmed to hear a voice close besideher say, Do not cry, Cinderella ; I am cometo help you. Suddenly looking up, she sawan old lady with a magic wand standing nearher. Cinderella, said her visitor, I am yourfairy God-mother, and I mean you to go tothe ball to-night ; obey me, and all will bewell. Just run into the garden and find mea pumpkin.
