Feeling just a little shy, but very happy,Cinderella passed up the grand staircase;through the state chambers, adorned withlovely statuary, splendid mirrors, costly pic-tures, and tropical plants of rare grace andbeauty; until at length she found herselfpacing the polished floor of the gilded ball-room. Her appearance at once caused aflutter of curiosity amongst the brilliantassemblage. Every one wondered who thisfair young stranger could be. Even amidthis dazzling scene her wonderful beauty,and the richness of her dress, made her theobserved of all observers. Cinderella hadnot been many minutes in the room beforeshe saw her two cross sisters, who hadof course arrived a little earlier; but theydid not know her in her fine dress.Like all the other guests they regarded heras some strange beautiful princess whohad come in state to the ball. They told her that a charming youngPrincess had come in state to the Ball, and haddisappeared no one knew when ; and how annoyedthe Prince was, and anxious to find out who she was. Another ball was to be given, with the hope thatthe lovely stranger would go to that also. The next time Cinderella dressed her sisters forthe royal ball she was in good spirits, for she knewthat she would go too. And so it happened.
