The early inhabitants of Acarnania were (with the exceptionof the Amphilochians) considered to belong to the Hellenic race,though they were intimately connected with the Epirot tribes.They were at an early period driven into the interior by the Greeksettlers on the coast; they are described as a rade and barbarouspeople, engaged in constant wars with their neighbours, hving byrapine, and famed for their skill in slinging.
