These townswere m<jstly destroyed either before or at the time of the fall ofXineveh : when Xenophon passed by their sites, he observed themounds, but heard little of the famous cities that lay buried beneaththem ; even the name of Xineveh is imnoticed, and the j^lace is de-scribed as Mesplla, while that of Eesen appears under the Gr^ecisedform Larissa. Some few towns of a later date are foimd in thesouthern part of Assyria, of which Cteslphon is the only one thatattained celebrity.
