he passenger cannot becut off e.xcept through the automatic action of the overhead devicewhen the car passes that point. The switch for operating theselights consists of a magnet, armature and a handle for raising thearmature up to touch the magnet core. The device for resettingthe switch and putting out the lights consists of two U-shapedpieces of brass which are insulated from each other. This clamp isused in place of the ear to support the trolley wire. By raising thearmature up to touch the core of the magnet the circuit throughthe lamps is completed. When the car passes the resetting switchthe wiring is so arranged that the current of the electromagnet isshort circuited and the armature then falls, thus putting out thelights. It is claimed that on account of the cheapness of this de-vice, it is practicable to have a signal at every stopping place for theconvenience of passengers, and it is of considerable help to themotormen as they can see far ahead what stops they have to make.
