le space between the river and thehill sides. The Massachusetts Highway Commission does notallow the rails of any electric vnad to be less than 14 ft. 6 in.from the center of the macadam way of the state, so, in orderto fulfil this requirement, it was necessary in many places to widenthe highway on the hill side, as the state would not allow itsroad to be widened on the west side. The necessity of disposingof the excavated material frequently obliged the company to dumpthe waste on the river side of the state road, and in many placesthe result has been the actual widening of the roadway at thosepoints, so that a widening of the macadam would turn the roadinto a boulevard. The rock excavations were often hard in wnrk. on account ofseams, which minimized the effect of dynamite blasts. There werenumerous ledges to be removed, the longest uf which was a quarterof a mile long and from 10 to 15 feet in height. In one case aledge 250 ft. long, 40 ft. high and 30 ft. deep could not be removed
