m I32d- St., New York, to Portchester, was given a hearing onSept. 30th by the State Railroad Commissioner. Mr. John B. Mc-Donald, the subway contractor, is to build the new line if thecharter is granted. Arguments for and against the road wereheard by the commissioner, the objections to the road comingmainly from the New York, New Haven & Hartford, the New admission charged; but in order to provide a place where ladiesand children and their escorts might be exclusive, if desired, someeighty chairs were enclosed by a white birch railing and a chargeof 5 cents was made for each seat. The patronage of the theater,grew, and with no disposition to make a profit from the operationof the theater, the management sought to increase the worth«ofthe attractions. With somewhat of fear and trembling, an operaorganization was engaged for six weeks at an expense that wouldhave been disastrous without greatly increased patronage. Thisform of entertainment found immediate favor and was a success

Hestated it was feasible both from an engineering and commercialpoint of view to run cars from Portchester to the subway andfrom there to City Hall. A representative of the Bronx Alliance,an organization of 4,000 residents of the Bronx, also testified as tothe necessity for a new line. The hearing was continued. from the start. Better stage settings, scenic and electrical effectswere continually employed and their success as drawing cardshas been highly gratifying.
