The heaviest fire loss known in the annals of electricmanufacturing, occurred on the night of August i, whenthe magnificent plant of the Siemens-Halske Company ofAmerica was completely destroyed, entailing a net lossof $350,000. This fine manufactory was situated in thelumber district of Chicago, on the corner of BlueIsland avenue and Wood street. About six oclock p. m. of glazed marble and slate and fused wire. The worksordinarily employed about 2,500 men in all departments,and even during the slack time gave work to 500 or 600mechanics. The small engraving upon page 465 shows the remainsof the Lake Erie 250-horse-power vertical engine, whichwas direct coupled to dynamos of a similar capacity. Tothe left is a i50-horse-po\ver Williams engine, belted toa Siemens-Halske dynamo. Just back of the Erie engineand to the left, may be seen the ruin of a very elaborate

The mag-nificent city fire department, fire boats and all, waspowerless, except as it could restrain the flames fromadjacent property. Before morning the great brick stiucture, which con-tained the expensive manufacturing machinery of theSiemens-Halske, as well as manjr thousands of dollarsworth of goods in various stages of completion, weretotally destroyed, as our engravings show more eloquentlythan words. The large work for Brooklyn, Toronto,and other street railway plants was reduced to a mass switch board, designed by the company to illustrate their2, 3, and 5 wire systems.
