WORKS OF THE CHlSHiiLM i: MOORE MFG. CO. of that company, will continue the management of this departmentin the new company, and brings to his work that long experienceand careful study which insures success. MAIL ON CARS IN SPRINGFIELD, MASS.
Text Appearing After Image:
An attempt is being made by Postmaster Hyde, of Springfield,Mass., to establish a street car mail collection system, but has metwith opposition on the part of the street railway, which companysfranchise stipulates expressly that it must do a purely passengerbusiness. The question arises whether mail matter would beclassed as freight, which the road is not allowed to haul. Thecompany further objects to stopping its cars every time a personwants to mail a letter, and also at the post office to have the mailboxes emptied. It is thought possible that the stopping of thecars might be done away with through the introduction of a devicein use in some of the western cities. By means of this arrangementmail can be dropped by a person beside the tracks while the caris in motion. An extra lip is built upon the hip over thelunning gear at the sides of the car. From this a slide or chuteeads down to a box. and letters dropped in the receiver at the sideof the car easily fall down into the box. AN
