t. The latter road retaliated by putting on better double-truck cross-seat cars, and its traffic came back. Themovement has grown until there are a large number ofdouble-truck cars now running. The Robinson radialtruck has been used under a great many cars on theUnion Depot Railroad. The American Car Companysnew truck, for use under long cars, is being extensivelytried there at present under cars of that make turned outfor two prominent lines. The sixty cars built for theCitizens Railway (last month changed from cable toelectric), are of the kind just mentioned, and are probablythe finest and most recent development of street-car evolu-tion in that city. Our engravings show interior and ex-terior views of one of these cars. They are imposingstructures, seating forty passengers and rivaling steamcoaches in size. seats. These cars are equipped with two G. E. 800motors. The easy riding of the double-truck, together withthe cross-seats, seems to overbalance in the publicmind any inconvenience caused by climbing into thehigh cars. In addition to the popularity of the long car therewere certain economical reasons which led to its adoption.In a city of snow and heavy grades these reasons wouldnot hold good. Managers reason that it is more desir-able on most accounts to run one long car than a motorcar and trailer. The long car takes less current, is freerfrom accidents and can be taken better charge of by oneconductor than can a motor and trailer. The custom isalmost universal of running a trailer as a smoking carbehind all single truck motor cars. G. W. Baumhoff, superintendent of the Lindell Rail-way, hit upon a plan several years ago for making useof old horse cars and affording the smokers a chance onevery car.
