of power consumption it was neces-sary to compute the energy taken for the car lighting and heating, which was not included in the main circuit wattmeter readings. There arc 35 lamps per car, taking approximately 1.93 kw. with 550volts; the headlight takes 1.38 kw.; the heaters are arranged infour groups; each group is controlled by a switch and takes about4.6 kw. By observing the times when light and heat were turnedon and off, the total energy so used on all cars was calculated asbeing, for car lights, 28 kw.-h.; for headlights, 17 kw.-h.; forheaters, 182 kw.-h.; total for light and heat, 226 kw.-h. The obtaining of wattmeter readings on the cars involved the solu-tion of the problem of so suspending the meters as to protect thejewels from damage by the vibration and jarring of the cars. ThisAas done by suspending each meter in a sort of cradle by two coiledsprings of stiff steel wire, from the car roof. While this methodremoved satisfactorily the vibration, the swinging round of the

It also caused some doubt as to whether the readingsmight not be affected by the movement of the meter. A calibrationmade later with the meters suspended similarly and bounced aroundeven more violently by hand, showed that there was no appreciableeffect produced by the motion. Calibrations of wattmeters usedwere made, both before and after the test, which showed no appre-ciable change in the constants. The f
