ts is being installed onthe Miami & Erie Canal which is not only unique in the history oftransportation but involves the use of a three-phase system of elec-tric traction, being the first electrical installation of its kind in thiscountry and the most extensive application of mechanical canalboat haulage in the world. The Miami & Erie Canal runs from the Ohio River at Cincinnatiin a general northerly direction and connects with Lake Erie at railroad systems of the state existed, it constituted one of the busiestarteries of trade in the state of Ohio. The territory through whichit passes and that immediately contiguous to it contains about 5,315,-000 people, or nearly one-third of the entire population of the stateand it passes through 18 cities and towns whose population aggre-gates 656,500, and penetrates the richest and most fertile sections ofthe state. The construction of ihc Miami & Erie Canal was commencedabout 1825 and in its early years, before the competition of the slate, has been gradually diverted to the railroads, so that for thelast 20 years the appropriations for the maintenance of the canalnot only included all of its receipts but often considerable amountsin excess taken direct from the slate treasury.
