It beingnecessary that whatever system is adopted be approvedby the commissioner of public works the formal test justdescribed was made. Another S3^stem in which the mo-tor was put on the canal boat and made to drive a pro-peller (current being supplied by a double trolley overthe canal) was tried in 1893 and approved by state au-thorities but the Cataract company thinks the cablewaysystem is superior. It is estimated that with electricity the cost of motive power will be re-duced 82 per centover mules and 55per cent oversteam.
