The concrete door structure is hrouitht up between the lines ofthe track lo form longitudinal foundations for the rows of roofsupporting columns. The elevation of the top of these foundationsor benches is that of the base of the track rail. The roof supportingcolumns are I-shaped in section and arc made up of four 4 x 3 xf6 in. angles riveted to a !4 x 6 in. plate. At the tops of the columnswhere they join the roof beams additional plates to form the properconnection are riveted on and at the lases the columns arc similarlyreinforced. The outer tracks of the subway for the use of the surface carswill connect with a loop around the business district via Walnut.Fifth and Arch Sts. so that the local cars eastbound in the subwaywill run on the south outside track and after encircling the loopreturn to the w-est by the north outside track. The two inner tracks for the elevated trains will continue oneast from the city hall as a double-track subway under Market St.The subway will extend eastward to a point between Water andFront Sts., where by an incline between the two latter streets thesubway will terminate at a portal near Arch St. From the portalthe track will pass onto an elevated structure leading to DelawareAve. and extending southward along the Delaware river front toSouth St. The four track portion of the subway has a width of 48 ft
