This arose from the fact thateach road operating in Birmingham had its own shop, which was feature oi the pipe track construction is that there are no bracesor girders used, and access throughout the pit from track to trackis thus made possible without coming out of it, the whole pit spacebeing unobstructed except by the track supports. ONE SECTION OF CAR HOUSK. the office of the barn foreman, the office of the superintendent ofthe railway department, who is at the barn from io;oo to ii:ooa. m. daily to call the attention of the men individually to rulesthey have violated, and that of the receiving cashier, whose dutyit is to receive the reports of conductors when they bring theircars in the barn at the completion of their runs. Immediatelyjoining this office is a large waiting room for the molormen andconductors. This room is provided with comfortablechairs, tables and copies of the leading street railwaypublications. It is well lighted and heated, andboards showing bulletin orders, runs, etc., are alsofound here. In connection with this room and lead-ing froiii it is a well kept, attractive looking toiletroom, provided with all of the necessary toilet acces-sories.
