Many manufacturingestablishments have recently located here, among thembeing the starch factory of the J. C. Hubinger Bros. Co.,with a capital stock of $1,000,000; the Du Pont Powder 214 Works with a capital slock of $1,000,000, and the Huis-kamp Shoe Co. with a capital of $500,000. Besides thecanal costing $7,000,000 the government has recently builtdry docks and a court house costing $100,000. The bestcivil engineers have estimated the fall of the river in frontof the city and say that at a cost of $200,000 the greatestand best water power in the country may be developed.This in connection with late inventions in electricity, bymeans of which power may be trans-mitted, gives flattering hopes for thefuture and great things may be ex-pected. The cars are marvels of comfortand attractiveness and of splendidworkmanship, having been built atihe shops of the St. Louis Car Com-pany. They are 16 feet in length,and are each equipped with two 15horse power motors. The electricsvstem is that of the Edison Company,and the engines are two HamiltonCorliss of 125 horse power each.
