Great advance-ment has been made of late years along this line; but costly plantsinstalled before late improvements were brought out frequentlysufTer loss from fires breaking out in most unexpected places, andcausing no little expense and anxiety. The air-cooled transformers arc equally liable to injury and burn-outs under continual overload, or when the attendant neglects tostart the air blower until hours after the load has been put on.Under such conditions fires will frequently break out. Were suchtransformers installed in a building apart from the main portion ofthe plant, the damage could be limited to that locality and easilycontrolled. Roth oil-cooled and air-cooled transformers are in some instancesplaced in a small subway, in which all approach to a fire would becut off at the stairway. All the apparatus contained in the subwayis therefore liable to loss. These might be transformers for rotaryconverters supplying current for a suburban line; in this event,
