Text Appearing Before Image:
of the way behind the car whennot sweeping. A large street watering tank, holding 5,000 gallons, is mountedon a flat car which precedes the sweeper. This sprinkles the streetfrom the center to the curb so that scarcely any dust is raised bythe sweeper. The brushes of the latter arc so flexibly arrangedthat every inequality of the pavement is followed and the sweepingis much more thorough than can be done by hand. At the conclusion of the initial trip, at which a number of thecity officials were present, they expressed themselves as entirelysatisfied with the workings of the sweeper, and stated that it met every requirement. Symington before the Western Railway Club, which was pub-lished in the Review for June, some further information wasbrought out in the discussion. Mr. F. A. Delano stated that theresults as to the absorbing capacity of cotton waste as compared witliwool waste coincide substantially with thetests made by Mr. Wickhorst, of the C.B. & Q. R. R. The third test seems toconfirm the first test in that the capillaryaction of the waste coincides pretty nearlywith its absorbing quality. The wool wastestands first in the matter of elasticiiy, andthat seems to be the only advantage th:.twool waste has over cotton. Ordinarywool waste is better and cleaner as a rule, and freer from shoddy material of all soitsthan ordinary cotton waste; so that if weget these results with commercial cottonwaste we might expect to have better re-sults if we are a little more careful ii;selecting our cotton waste. This is theadvantage of getting wh
