Five miles south of the old town of -A.ssuan on the Nile, theEnglish government has built an innnense dam of red granite, laidin Portland cement, as wonderful in its way as the pyramids, andfar more sensible in its purpose than the Sphinx. This dam fills the water supply of Boston and surrounding cities and towns, llis to be 850 ft. long; its maximum height 205 ft; its width atbottom 185 ft., at the top 20.5 ft.
