ciates or-ganized the Lewiston & Southeastern Electric Railway Co. with thepurpose of building a railroad from Lewiston, by Lake Waha an<lWestlake, to Grangeville, a distance of 85 miles, with a branch linefrom Westlake, via Ilo and Dublin, to Nez Perce City, a distance of25 miles. This proposition was and still is strongly opposed by thegreat transcontinental lines. About six weeks ago both the trans-continental lines threatened to invade this territory by putting innumerous corps of engineers, and lines were run in all directionsfrom these prairies. All at once, and without any warning what-ever, these various engineer corps were withdrawn, and the generalimpression given out that neither of the transcontinental lines wouldbuild. The people all through this section were so much enragedfrom this action that they held a mass meeting at Lewiston. andothers were held at Westlake. Cottonwood, Grangeville. About two weeks ago ColonelSpoflford brought capitalists from New York and London to Lewis-ton, and made arrangements with them to furnish the $3,000,000necessary to build the road. Then the Northern Pacific Co. evidently became alarmed, andone afternoon a large force of engineers appeared and went intocamp on the right of way of the Lewiston & Southeastern ElectricRy., near a canyon at the moiuh of Tammany Creek. Colonel Spof-ford foresaw their intentions to occupy with ties and rails this im-portant canyon at the mouth of Tannnany Creek, and when theengineers got up in the morning they were surprised to find thaithe Lewiston & Southeastern company had a force of men at workin this canyon.
