are moved by a worm driven by an eccentricfor which the power is derived from a small engine, are mounted ona series of heavy chains which revolve upon sprocket wheels at thefront and rear. By this movement the upper portion of the gratesare carried constantly forward. Each link of the chain is provided the small amount of iron from being overheated. There is no partof the coal bed lying un the grates larger than /i in. that is notreceiving the proper amount of oxygen; this permits rapid combus-tion, and the uniform distribution of the air results in minimum ofunconsumed carbon. The separate grates are supported at fourequidistant points on sprocket wheels. Fresh fuel is coked at the front end where there is a fire brickarch. The apparatus as a whole is mounted on wheels running on railsplaced at the sides of the ash pit, and can be drawn out clear of theboiler (even while the fire is on), for inspection and repairs or tomake room when necessary to replace furnace lining.s. ELEVATION AND SECTION OK MCKENZIE TRAVELING GRATE STOKER, with a cold rolled steel pin and three rollers, so that the chains rollon tracks on the bottom as well as the top, thereby relieving themachine of all the extra friction and strain in carrying its ownweight. The coal is ignited near the front and is carried slowlybackward, the speed of the grate being so adjusted that the timeof travel is sufficient for the complete combustion of the coal. Thecoal is fed through a hopper of the full width of the grate, and thedepth of the layer of coal fed is regulated by a door in the hopperwhich can be easily and quickly lifted or lowered; it fires itselfautomatically by the dropping of the coal through this grate in thehopper onto the grate bars at the front end. After the coal has beenconsumed, the ashes, clinkers and refuse are carried over theclinker apron at the back end and fall to the ash receiver withoutadmitting any air to the boiler from the rear.
