of the car, and is operated by means of a vertical shaftto the upper end of which aTatchet handle is attached. The mov-ing of this handle drives the plunger into the barrel of the pumpand makes it possible to put the desired pressure upon the liquidcontaind therein. Only one quarter of a turn of the ratchet handleis required to operate the pump. Dust is effectively excluded from the casting by a shield and thelubrication of the lower end of the vertical shaft is insured by thecapillary action of the bushing through which the shaft passes andwhich has its lower end submerged in the liquid. IMPRONED IKICE BR.\KE AS APPLIED TO A MA.XIMUM TRACTION TRUCK. From the back end of the pump cylinder a pipe leads downthrough the platform and thence beneath the floor to the oppositeend of the car, where a similar connection is made with the otherpump. At a point over the truck a flexible connection is made betweenthis pipe and the cylinders of a hydraulic clutch that is locatedupon the axle and operates the disc, thus doing away with the up-right telescope pipe, wire cables and all adjusting springs used inthe original type of friction clutch. In order that there may be a gradual application of the frictiondisc to the wheel, the pipe beneath the floor of the car is providedwith an air chamber. This air chamber serves to cushion the ap-plication of the power and permits the motorman to make thebrake application as rapidly or as slowly as the requirements ■>(the case may demand, and to make a perfectly smooth stop. Italso serves to do away with all sudden grippings of the discs,
