from a scene duringthe recent laying of the Duplex Track Companyss^-stem on Fourth avenue, at Eighth street, on theNew York & Harlem Railroad Companys line on NewYork City. The photograph waspurposely taken duringconstruction, and before the rails were surfaced or lined,to better show the parts which unite to form essentially abox rail. It will be seen that each of the two completedrails is formed of two parts, each of which is T headed nent and perfect guage. Every practical man will see ata glance the advantages of this construction in securingvertical as well as lateral stiffness and resistence. Creep-ing of either rails is made a most ditFicult and unlikelyoccurance. Track laying is made a comparatively easy matter whilethe paver has vastly less to contend with in this system.The tendency towards lateral displacement on curves isresisted by the pressure of the roadway on the chairs andthe rail web on both sides of the track while the thicknessof the rail heads avoids abrasion.
