NO. U, VAN DORN COUPLER. service. The automatic heads tor this order arc of an entirely newdesign with extra heavy links to meet the severe service on theelevated lims. NEW VAN DORN COUPLERS. The W. T. \an Dorn Co.. of Chicago, has designed two newtypes of couplers for the elevated railroads of New York, whichare shown in the accompanying illustration. One of these couplershas a long fiat arm with helical springs placed near the couplerhead. This is for use on the motor end of a car, and is arrangedso as to allow the drawbar to clear the motor and at the same timeto give a direct pull. This is known as the Van Dorn No. 16, andthe other, which is known as the No. 15, is for trail cars and theends of motor cars not equipped with motors. The two motorcejuipments of the Manhattan will carry both motors on one truckto get the greatest tractive effect. These are used in connectionwith the Barnes patent swivel on the body bolster, which securesvery smooth running of trains with the least pos
