f the receiver isan opening connectedwith the outlet pipewhich conducts thescum to the precipitat-ing chamber which isoutside of the boiler.The scum receiver is-stationary and of theproper height (about yin.) to always extendabove and below the water line in the lK)iler; an adjustable gate one-half this height an<lthe same width as the receiver is attached to one end of a curvedrod on the other end of which is a float, the rod being mounted ona pivot on top of the scum receiver. When the scum line in the boiler rises slightly above the centerof the scum receiver the float rises with it, causing the gate Ilclose tightly over the lower half of the inlet or opening of thescum receiver and shut out the water below the scum line. Thestratum of water containing the scum continues to pass into thereceiver over the top of the gate; as the scum line recedes the floatlowers with the receding water, throwing open the gate again. The scale forming mailer is thus carried to the settling chamber
