with the Lynn &Boston Railroad Co.. and as the Beverly & Danvers Street Ry.had been also consolidated a short time previously, there is nowbut one operating company north of Boston. The Lynn & Boston has ,100 miles of track and its stock repre-sents what 18 months ago were 14 corporations. The Old ColonyStreet Ry. controls all the Massachusetts roads south of Boston;it has .382 miles of track and represents what were 17 corporations.There now remains but one company, the Newport S: Fall River,a Rhode Island corporation, that is not consolidated with one ofthe two operating companies: the lines of this company connectwith the Old Colony at Fall River, Mass., and its lease to the OldColony has been authorized by the Legislature of Rhode Islandand Massachusetts so that the consolidation will soon be complete. (Vol. XI, No. 5- laws and approved by the Board ofRailroad Commissioners, special legis-lation being asked in but a (ew cases.The present Massachusetts Legislaturepassed two acts ratifying and confirm-ing all locations ever granted to the OldColony and the Lynn & Boston, themanagement considering this necessaryin order to enable it to carry out a plan,now under consideration, to refund theoutstanding bonds. The extended area covered by thecombined lines, and the general makeupof the properties themselves, has madedifficult in the extreme the task of soorganizing the executive and operatingforce as to secure the most harmonious,efficient and economical action through-out the many departments and ramifi-cations of the system. The way in whichthe problem was finally solved is shownin the accompanying diagram.
