which also form the jaws for the journal boxes aremassive forgings nearly as large as the bars of a locomotiveframe. They are deeper but not as thick. The end piecesof the frame are T-irons carried by palms worked upon theside pieces. The seats in these palms are finished and theholes are reamed for taper bolts. Locomotive practice isfollowed in constructing these trucks and wherever bolts areused they are made taper and the holes are reamed. Theswing bolster is held between a pair of angle iron transomswhich are bolted to the side frames of the truck. The endsof the angle are cut out and bent so as to form brackets forthe purpose. The wheels are of unusual size, being 45 in.in diameter. They are of cast iron and are mounted uponvery large axles. These are 7 ft. 6 in. long, and 5 in. indiameter at the wheel fit. The journals are 4% by 8 in. Each truck is furnished witha pair of 150-h. p. motors thus giving the car 600 h. p. Thetrucks weigh 11,080 lbs. each, the motors 10,000 lbs. per

BRILL locomotive; truck. only a few details are at hand in regard to it. The floorframe is of channel bars. It is 36 ft. 9 in. long and 6 ft. 9 in.wide. The channels are apparently about 10 in. deep. Thereare six crossings spaced so that the outer ones are 5 ft. 10 in.from the end of the car. No details whatever are given mregard to the body which is carried by a pair of the J. G.Brill Companys No. 27 (perfect) trucks of the type es-pecially designed to meet the requirements of steam pas-senger cars. These trucks are quite as great a departurefrom the common order as the scheme for the car itself. Oneof them is shown in the illustration. Under the conditions here presented, these trucks havetwo verv distinct functions. The first is that of the locomo-tive carrying the propelling machinery, keeping it in align-ment and transmitting its pull to cars, etc. The trucks mustperform all the essential work of a locomotive engine.
