ground by eight glass petticoat insulators which are arrangedin two tiers of four insulators each. The plates are burned toheavy lead bus bars which are reinforced at points where theypass from one group of cells to another and from the cells tothe switchboard. The leads are of bare copper covered withlead wherever there is danger of their coming in contact withacid fumes. The first battery is installed in a substantial brick buildinghaving a slate roof and brick paved floor, A room is partitionedoff at one end of the building for the switchboard apparatus, which consists of the standard Weston instruments and I-T-Ecircuit breakers. The height of the building was so arranged asto permit a second battery of the same size to be placed abovethe one already installed. Th new battery to be installed on the eastern division of theroad will maintain the voltage on the Garrettsville extension, which is now building. The two plants were designed and in-■^talled by Sipe S: Sigler. of Cleveland.

The feeder which will supply the battery to be installed willmaintain it by means of a booster at practically the same voltageas at the power house, thus making the battery a separate sub-^tation or distributing point. The first battery of 220 cells here-with illustrated was placed at the point mentioned for the reasonthat the road could hardly be operated between this point and thewestern terminus on account of the excessive drop in voltagewhich occurred here. Under the ordinary running conditionsthe voltage along this part of the road fell as low as 190. Sincethe installation of the battery the average voltage at this part ofthe line is 450 and the minimum pressure at any part of the roadis not less than ,350 volts. A careful estimate was made before installing the battery asto the cost of additional copper necessary to accomplish the sameresults and it was found that th<« cost would be nearly threelimes as much
