The cars in this orderwere for a South American line situated in the mountaindistricts, and so far away from tide water and so difificultof access that it was desirable to have the total weight ofeach package kept down to 160 lbs., a convenient weightwhere shipments have to be made, as in this case, on thebacks of pack animals. One of the cars was put up in the style shown and theaccuracy of the mill work all tested. Cutting of the sills also reduces the strengthof the car body at points where the timbers cannot be ef-fectively reinforced, and in fact the whole construction is amakeshift. The old style knock-down car cannot be said tobe durable. By the adoption of new methods of construc-tion, and designing the posts with special reference to tak-ing down for shipment, it has been found possible to makethe finished work a unit. The sawing apart is no longernecessary and the car becomes as strong after it is re-erected as it was at first. In service these cars stand as welland last as long as cars built in the ordinary way and putin service without being taken apart, in this respect show-ing themselves greatly superior to the old knock-downcars.
