About eightgallons of cooling water is required for keeping thecylinders at the right temperature, and this water has tobe supplied every twenty-five to thirty miles. Two cylinders are used in the engine, which witii thedriving mechanism are of simple construction, easily under-stood and handled,, and free from danger of explosion. The special features of the Daimler motor are thequickness with which it can start the carriage, and thefact that it emits neither heat, smoke, soot, nor smell.It is also easily accessible from all sides, and is fittedeither in front or in the rear of the carriage. escape touching the tops of the breakers. At the outerend, a stop is made for a few minutes to give passengersa view of the sea and distant shore. The illustrationsshow a boat load starting out from the trolley house,arrival at the shears and the unloading on the beach. An improvement would be, the enlargement of theplatform and its use as a half-way house. With com-fortable seats and a wide awning to intercept the hotrays of the sun, the platform should be a delightful, cool,and breezy spot. Electric street railways could improve on the ConeyIsland aerial trolley, which has its own little power plant,by taking the current from the street railway circuit, andmaking the installation still more ine.xpensive. COST OF HORSELESS CARRIAGES. An English manufacturer of horseless carriages givesa description of one of his devices which took part inthe recent road race. The motive power is the Daimlermotor which is really a gas engine of the four cycle typerunning at 600 revolutions per minute.
