At many points it was necessary to blast a road-way out of the mountainside, and as the car glides alongits narrow path, winding around the jutting points of rockthe tree covered mountains above afford a striking con-trast to the dashing water an hundred feet below. Thecanjon ride is one never to be forgotten. Reaching thebottom of the canyon the river is crossed on a trestle 300feet long, and the road winds along its banks for a mileand a half, at last abruptly turning a point opens out ontoSilver beach and follows the shore of Puget Sound to.thequaint old town of Steilacoom. The view here is magnificient. The car runs alongonly 20 feet above high water giving the passengers alovely view of the sound with its deep blue waters shin-ing like a mirror, its lovely islands, and in the back-ground tlie grand rugged summits of the Olympic moun-tains, always snow-covered and beautiful. TRESTLE AT EXl RANGE OF CANYON. per cent grade into Steilacoom, the oldest town on PugetSound, the early rendezvous of the Hudson Bay Com-panys employes and a place of refuge for the advent-urous white settlers during Indian wars. The road runsthrough the center of the town on a tine graded avenueand reaches the water on Union avenue where the Com-pany has built a handsome depot and restaurant. Thisroad leads all others in distance to which power is trans- milled from station, the Steilacoom end being 11 milesfrom the power house. This is successfully accomplishedby acomplete system of feeders and by using the watersof the sound and of a creek for a ground return. Theconstruction and equipment of this road was done underthe sole supervision of S. B. Livermore, who has been anengineer of the railway department of the Thomson- i^ ^
