Dublin postal authorities have tried the experiment ofplacing mail boxes on the street cars for the accommo-dation of persons who cared to mail letters. Althoughconsiderable money was used and efforts made to inducethe people to patronize it, after 19 months the ser-vice was abandoned as there was not enough encourage-ment to warrant its continuance. The postmaster gen-eral expected to extend the service on all the street rail-way lines of the city. Each car running in and out oftown on the Donnybrook line was provided with a box toreceive letters, the same as regular letter boxes. Paths lead from the stations so thatpassengers may readily ascend by the mountain on foot,if they do not care to continue by the easier method ofbeing hauled. Each station is fitted with a dining roomand bed-rooms, the latter about the size of a steamshipcabin. They are lighted with electricity. Instead of continuing to the top of the mountain b)rail, passengers are transferred to an elevator, which isbuilt inside a circular iron lube that was sunk into a holeblasted in the rock. The elevator is operated by adynamo which is driven by hydraulic power from lakeLuchinen in the Lauterbrunnen.
