Encased in the body are two highly tempered spiralsprings. Covering the body, and thus protecting thesprings, is a cast steel plate 25J/2 inches long and 4inches wide, fitted to body bj- grooved joint. A rack inthe center of this plate has teeth, which are made tomesh with teeth in steel pinion. To the steel pinion iscast the socket for holding the trolley pole. These parts,with a few minor fittings, comprise the whole base. The Brooklyn Street Railway Company, ClevelandiOhio, say that during the twelve months since they firstput them into use the repairs on them have been nomi- nal as compared to other trolley bases which they haveused.
