This place he reached on the loth of October.Much he had vexed himself over the short marchesof his men during the previous fortnight, as he wasanxious to see his brethren again before they pro-ceeded on to the lake; but a merciful Providenc^regulated it otherwise, and by means of the delaysof the porters, delivered him unwittingly from whatmight have ended in serious calamity to many of them,and perhaps disaster to nearly the whole expedition. Mpwapwa may be considered an oasis in the greatsalt desert. Caravans must all pass through it, andmust be provisioned there after the hunger on themarches behind, and with a supply for several daysin front. They had all been led to believe the place
