Theirambition was to become Roman themselves, to restore rather than to destroythe fading splendor of the empire. They thus fraternized readily with theinhabitants of their part of Gaul; and as these people far outnumbered them,the land was changed in little, except the infusion of a new and vigorous stockamong its people. The Burgundians who came down the Rhone valley were a wild tribe, andthe Franks were the fiercest of all and the least amenable to civilization.
