And as soonas events shaped so that he could well be sparedfrom those duties, he resigned his secretaryship inthe Association and entered upon the new work. In 1875, also, the University graduated its firstcollege class. It had taken some of them, ten yearsbefore, with little more than a knowledge of thealphabet, and carried them through extended pre-paratory studies and a thorough classical course, tothe point where a rigid examination awarded themthe degree of A. B. At graduation one was choseninstructor in the University, and others found re-sponsible positions awaiting them as teachers in thecity schools at Nashville and Memphis. Two werethe sons of an unlettered freed woman, who hadconsecrated every spare dollar of her hard earnings,for these ten years, to aid her boys in getting aneducation.
