OKO and Yum-Yum were to bemarried at sunset, and as the eveningapproached Yum-Yum became verysad indeed. Although she was not asmuch interested in Nanki Poo as shehad been a year ago, nevertheless hisunexpected return to Titipu on thevery day of her intended marriagewith Koko seemed to make her still more unwillingto unite herself to a man who was absolutely unin-teresting to her. She wandered forth into the shadygrounds of the Official Residence in order to thinkit over and try to find some means of escaping theunpleasant doom that Koko had prepared for her. Now Nanki Poo was so absorbed by his distressat the prospect of Yum-Yums marriage that he kepthovering about the Residence all day long. He sawYum-Yum enter the garden and he at once accostedher, for he had something to say that he thought 46 HE SAW YUM-YUM ENTER THE GARDEN

THE STORY OF THE MIKADO might exercise a powerful influence over her move-ments. Yum-Yum, said he, Im in a dreadful stateof mind. Ive travelled here night and day for threeweeks in the belief that your guardian was to bebeheaded, and now I find that hes reprieved andthat you are to be married to him this evening ! Alas, yes ! said Yum-Yum. But you do not love him ? Alas, no ! Then refuse to be married to him and be marriedto me instead. Impossible, said Yum-Yum. It is true that Ido not love Koko, but a wandering minstrel whosings and plays outside places of entertainment ishardly a fitting husband for the ward of a Lord HighExecutioner. Nanki Poo looked right and left to be quite surethat they were unobserved, while he made the im-portant communication to which I have referred. What, said he in an emphatic whisper, if itshould prove that, after all, I am no musician ? There ! said Yum-Yum, I was certain of itdirectly I heard you play.
