THE HARBOR, LOOKING FROM CADIZ. flocked to Columlnis to beg employment in the newcolony. People thought they had only to go to theIndies to pick up gold. The voyage also seemed tooffer a fine field for adventure, better even than had theMoorish wars. Many had to be refused, and as it was,more were engaged to go than had been intended.

THE SECOND VOYAGE. m Among others who were to sail with Columbus was hisyounger brother Diego, who had no doubt come fromGenoa as soon as he had heard of the good fortune ofChristopher. Horses were put on the ships, as well as cattle, seeds,vines, sugar-canes, and grafts. Besides these things,the vessels were loaded with an abimdance of beads,hawksbells, looking-glasses, and such other inexpensivetrinkets as would take the fancy of the Indians. There was so much to be done that the fleet couldnot be got ready to sail until the 25th of September,1493. There was a great bustle of departure and leave-taking in the harbor of Cadiz an hour before sunriseon the morning of the sailing, for fifteen hundred peo-ple, many of them men of high rank, were starting outfor the New World, and crowds had come to bid themfarewell.
