ncreased on finding that their friends had brought withthem plenty of red parrot feathers from Amsterdam:these feathers being as highly valued here as in theMarquesas, so that as long as they lasted trading waseasy. These red feathers were used in their religious rites,tied up in bunches of eight or ten and fastened to the endof a small cord, five or six inches long, made of the fibres ofcocoa-nut, twisted until it was like wire : this was heldbetween the finger and thumb whilst a prayer was recited.In case of need, two or three feathers sufficed.
