It should be mentioned that the name of this island,Otaheite—or, as we now call it, Tahiti—was not knownbefore Cooks visit. It was on the ioth of May that helearned it from the natives. It had before this been knownin England as King George the Thirds Island, so namedby Captain YVallis. But in addition to leaving something behind him, Cookbrought something away from Otaheite.
