attempt to steal a buoy that marked the placewhere the anchor had been dropped, and it took two shotswhizzing over the heads of these bold pilferers before theymade up their minds to let it alone. Pigs, fruit, and waterwere had at this anchorage, though the trade in pigs wasalmost ruined by a young officers paying for one with alarge quantity of red feathers, which he had got at Tonga-taboo—red feathers being, of all things in the world mostprized at the Marquesas; so that, when once seen, no otherprice in the shape of nails, beads, or the like, was looked atfor a moment. This piece of mischief came of breaking,just for this occasion, Cooks rule, that one authorisedperson on board should manage all the traffic with thenatives. The young gentleman had put his foot in it,and, unfortunately, was not himself the sufferer. TATTOOED MARQUESIAN. THE MARQUESAS. 121 met with in the islands of the South Pacific. The men,who were from five feet ten to six feet high, were a gooddeal tattooed, which caused them to look darker than thewomen and young folks, who were content with verylittle of this peculiar decoration, and in consequence lookedas fair as some Europeans. Their hair,—which, like that ofEnglishmen, was of various colours, red excepted,—waygenerally worn short, leaving a bunch at each side of theupper part of the head tied in a knot. The beard wassometimes long, hanging loose, or tied in two bunches underthe chin ; sometimes it was plaited. A sort of head-dress,made of fibres of cocoa-nut husk, and adorned withmother-of-pearl shell and small feathers standing on end,was much worn by them ; and also a kind of broad frill ofwood, on which small red peas were gummed, roundthe neck.
