he then was, made hisappearance with a numerous retinue, and received thecaptain (who had seen him when a boy, in 1769) in some-thing of state. The great man was seated on a stool in theopen air, and having made his visitor sit down upon it byhis side, the other officers being seated on the ground, pro-ceeded to inquire about several of those who had been withthe captain on his former visit. He was very civil, keepingCaptain Cook close to him all the morning, and makinghim sit upon his own stool, which was carried from placeto place by one of his servants. Of course, he got plenty ofpresents in return : medals—a number of which, with thehead of George III. on one side and two ships on theother, had been struck by the Admiralty at home on pur~pose for such occasions—nails, knives, looking-glasses, ashirt, and other articles. These were acknowledged by thegift of a hog to each of the commanders. Others were gotby trading, so that the crews had that day a hearty dinnerof fresh pork.

IOI At their old quarters in Matavai Bay they were recog-nised by many of their old acquaintances, and were wellreceived by the king, Otoo, a fine, well-made man of aboutthirty years of age, but so afraid of the guns that it waswith no small difficulty that he was persuaded to come onboard the Resolution. He did get up his courage at last,and came with an imposing train, on the morning of the27th of August, having also his sister and younger brotherwith him. Presents were made to all of them in returnfor those sent by the king, and after breakfast the captaintook the whole family home in his boat. On landing,an old woman, mother of Tootahah, one of Cooks earliestfriends on his first landing in Tahiti, seized both thecaptains hands, and, weeping, exclaimed, in her owntongue, Tootahah, your friend, is dead ! This was donewith so much warmth of feeling that Cook, man as he was,was affected almost to tears. The king at once led heraway; but the captain contrive
