Two fire-placeswere common in these houses, and, as there was nochimney or hole for the escape of smoke, except the door,which was so low that entrance had to be made bentdouble, they were found by our people intolerably hot, aswell as smoky. The natives seemed fond of warmth,making small fires here and there when they were out ofdoors, just to hover over and warm themselves. Three orfour pointed stones, fixed in the earth outside the houses,served to support the cooking-pot over the fire which waskindled underneath it. The canoes were of the clumsiestmake that Cook had ever seen. They were double ones,made of the trunks of large trees hollowed out—two,about three feet apart, fastened together by cross-piecesof wood, which projected a little over the side.
