Theold sea-lions were killed chiefly for their fat or blubber, toyield oil, the meat not being eatable ; but the young oneswere savoury. SEA-LIONS. I49 notice a sort of happy family of the wild beasts andbirds by which it was peopled; all mixing together, likecattle and poultry in a farm-yard, though each had itsown head-quarters. The sea-lions took the sea-coast; thesea-bears were up in the interior ; the birds called shagsperched themselves on the highest cliffs ; the penguinsliked to be able to run easily backwards and forwardsbetween the sea and the land (their wings are too short toserve them for flying); and the other birds suited theirtastes in their own way.
