than any amount ofsalutes; but the heavy rains that fell for several days whilstthey were filling the water-casks, much endangered thehealth of the crew. Airing and drying the ship betweendecks, and making the people wash and dry their clothes,were the measures resorted to as the best to avoid injuryfrom this hot, damp weather. At two in the afternoon of tle 29th of October, theshadowy, cloud-shrouded form of the vast Table Mountainrose up in the distance, and our voyagers hoped to castanchor at its feet before nightfall. The name of this moun-tain has been given to it on account of its very singularappearance, as though its upper part had been cut offmidway; and when the clouds descend upon its summit,that is called laying the table-cloth. They were disap-pointed in their hope of anchoring, having to stand off andon the night through. SECOND VOYAGE. S5 the wise heads that had seen it: some supposing that itwas produced by a peculiar kind of insect, others denyingthis. To make sure, Cook had a quantity of the shining,flashing water drawn up at the ships side, and then it wasproved, beyond doubt, that insects were the cause of thissingular appearance : small, round, transparent creatures, thesize of a pin-head. What their light is, is another thing;most likely it is similar to that of the glow-worm, whichit resembles. On a dark night, this appearance of the wateris exceedingly beautiful—as though the sea were all alightwith a pale, changing, quivering flame. The moist sea-sand also partakes of it. On mooring in Table Bay, next morning, Cook got hiseleven guns duly in return to his own salute. The Dutch-men knew what was proper, and they did it. He also got freshmeat, and his ship, which was a little the worse for wearwith the run from Plymouth, was fresh painted and caulked.Caulking is cramming the seams of a ships
