for in the course of hisramble in the woods he met with something that, by hisown account, was queerer still, for he declared that, to thebest of his belief, he had seen the devil, with horns andwings, creeping through the grass so slowly that, but forJohns being afeard, as he said, he might have touchedhim. This hideous apparition proved to be a bat, which atthat side of the world is a big creature, as well as a veryugly one—as it is all the world over. The mans fright, itmust be said, had magnified the bat two or three dozen-fold, for he told his comrades that it was the size of agallon cask, whereas the poor thing was only as big as apartridge. Vegetables were found here by the wanderers, some worth-less, others good ; and as their nets supplied them withfish and their guns with occasional pigeons, the invalids—some of them had been suffering from scurvy—were all thebetter for it.
